Nicole NoZe: Oppositions & coalitions between life and death

Interview to Sissy Sigioultzi-Rooka, Philologist, Writer, member of the Union of Journalists Periodical & Electronic Press NWE, Radio Producer at radio1d.gr and President of the”Greek Cyprus Cultural Association”

A paragraph of myself

In my art and legal academic research, I try to transgress, open up and experiment with methodological guidelines in order to establish the foundations for the accessibility and communicability of embodied knowledge about ourselves and the (legal) spaces we find ourselves in.

I especially explore the possibilities of autonomous female embodiment and female sexuality, as well as the oppositions and coalitions between symbiosis and separation, violence and passion, autonomy and subordination and ultimately life and death and the fundamental vulnerability underlying our embodied existence.

My Inspiration

My main artistic inspirations are Niki de Saint Phalle, Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Francis Bacon and Tracey Emin. I was always especially moved and touched and had these kind of “lightbulb” moments when viewing their artworks. They are or were all in their own way able to communicate and make sense of their embodied experiences within the world and share them with an extraordinary intensity, something I strive for.

My mediums

I mainly use acrylics and coal because of the inert flexibility and openness they provide as artistic tools. I however have also used Food, Clothes, Hair, and all sorts of materials.

My Technique and Style

I think my style could be described as abstract or abstract figurative. I explore boundaries and tensions between impulsivity and control, but leaning more towards impulsivity.

How do you define the end, the point of completion for each one of your artworks?

I just know. If I don’t know it will never be finished.

How important is naming your artworks? How do you choose a name?

I care a lot about the titles of my works. They are part of the process. I come up with the title after I finish the artwork. They are part of the final statement.

Why did you choose art in your life?

I know it sounds cheesy but it is what keeps me alive, so in a way I have no choice.
